Navigating the Tides: Nauti Sisters Sea Farm Featured in Civil Eats on Warming Waters and Maine Oysters

At Nauti Sisters Sea Farm, our passion for cultivating delicious Maine oysters runs as deep as the waters of Casco Bay. We're committed to sustainability, transparency, and creating unforgettable experiences on the working waterfront and that includes being honest about the environmental challenges we face.

That’s why we’re honored to be featured in Civil Eats’ recent article, “Warming Waters Cause Invasion of Sea Squirts at Maine Fisheries”, which shines a light on how climate change is reshaping aquaculture in the Gulf of Maine.

The story explores the rising presence of invasive sea squirts - fast-growing, sticky organisms that thrive in warming waters and create major headaches for oyster farmers. For us, this became especially apparent in our first season during the summer of 2020. The essential work of flipping our oyster cages, a key step in preventing biofouling and promoting healthy growth, was complicated by these globby invaders clinging to our gear and increasing the biomass we had to manage.

But resilience is part of the job. As farmers of the sea, we’re constantly adapting, innovating, and working to maintain the quality and sustainability of our oysters in an ever-changing ocean. Features like this one help raise awareness about the real impacts of climate change on Maine’s fisheries — and why it matters to everyone who loves local seafood.

We’re proud to be part of this important conversation, and even prouder to invite you out on the water with us. Our tours don’t just offer oyster tastings — they’re a firsthand look at the people, practices, and environment behind Maine’s vibrant seafood culture.
