As Seen in Maine Magazine: Nauti Sisters Featured in “Want to Help Combat Climate Change? Eat More Oysters.”

We’re honored to be featured in the pages of Maine Magazine’s July issue in the article “Want to Help Combat Climate Change? Eat More Oysters,” written by Anna Fiorentino with stunning photography by Steve De Neef.

The piece dives deep into the growing movement of women-led oyster farms in Maine—and the powerful environmental role oysters play in cleaning our coastal waters, supporting biodiversity, and helping to combat climate change.

As a young, woman-owned business based on the Royal River in Yarmouth, Maine, Nauti Sisters Sea Farm is proud to be part of this new generation of farmers and tour operators working at the intersection of aquaculture, sustainability, and storytelling.

🌊 Our Role in a Changing Waterfront

The article highlights Nauti Sisters founder Alicia Gaiero, one of several Maine women transforming the aquaculture landscape. At just 23, Alicia built a thriving oyster farm and experiential tourism business from the ground up—without a family history on the water, but with an unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and equity.

Our work is featured alongside our neighbors and friends at Wolfe Neck Oyster Company, showcasing how a new generation of shellfish farmers is banding together—not competing—to strengthen Maine’s coastal economy.

From diving for sunken cages to mentoring new growers, the story captures the hard, hopeful, and often humorous reality of working on the water.

🦪 Why Oysters Matter

If you’ve ever wondered why oyster farming is being embraced by scientists, foodies, and policymakers alike—this story lays it all out:

  • Each oyster filters up to 50 gallons of water per day, improving coastal water quality

  • Oyster cages provide habitat for sea life and can help reseed wild populations

  • Farming oysters uses almost no feed, fuel, or freshwater—making it one of the most sustainable forms of protein on the planet

We’re proud to be part of a food system that gives more than it takes—and to offer tours and charters that bring people into that story.

📣 Why This Feature Matters to Us

Being recognized in Maine Magazine, alongside some of the state’s most respected oyster growers, is more than just an honor—it’s a reflection of our mission.

We’re not just running boat tours. We’re creating experiences that:

  • Celebrate the working waterfront

  • Center women’s leadership in marine industries

  • Inspire environmental curiosity and action

  • Taste really, really good
